The two mile stretch of white sand beach in Sunny Isles is among the best in world. Combine this with convenient access to Miami International and Fort Lauderdale/ Hollywood International airports, top of the line luxury resorts, Samson Oceanfront Park, an abundance of dining and entertainment options, and you can see why more than one million people choose Sunny Isles, Florida as a vacation destination each year. It was named #1 in TripAdvisors's TravelCast Top Ten U.S. Destinations.

All in One Place

With a land area of approximately 1.78 square miles, the brilliant city is located midway between Fort Lauderdale and Miami on a barrier island with the Atlantic Ocean on one side, providing easy access to boating, fishing, and all the major cruise lines that utilize Port Everglades and the Port of Miami. A richly diverse culture keeps Sunny Isles real estate in high demand. According to the U.S. Census, more than 47 percent of adults in the city have a bachelor's degree or higher. The median household income is $46,119 and the median value for a single-family home is $285,000. That is about $115,000 above the national median home value. More than 69 percent of the 10,865 households speak at least one language other than English. Fifty-seven percent of the 21,720 residents were foreign born and 96 percent live in multi-unit structures. The home ownership rate for Sunny Isles real estate is 54.2 percent.

The Growing Popularity

Developer Harvey Baker Graves first recognized the value of this small gem. He purchased a 2.26-square-mile section of land to build a resort in 1920 and called it Sunny Isles. Completion of the Haulover bridge in 1925 gave easy access to Miami Beach and brought more developers. Kurtis Froetert purchased the city from Graves in 1936. He constructed the Sunny Isles Pier and the location began gaining popularity as a top vacation spot. Sunny Isles real estate picked up in the 1950s with construction of the first single-family homes. Throughout the 50s and 60s, another 30 motels were built to accommodate the growing demand.

Historically Significant

The Ocean Palm was America's first two-story hotel and the main attraction of "Motel Row". It is closed as of 2013 and plans are underway for a high-rise condominium complex on the site. The development boom of the early 2000s replaced most historic hotels with luxury condos. The city pier received historic site designation in 1982. After being damaged by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, it was repaired and opened as the Newport Fishing Pier in 2013.

When citizens voted to incorporate in 1997, they changed the city's name to Sunny Isles Beach although it has come to be known as “Little Moscow” due to influx of Russian emigration. It became one of the most popular tourist and real estate locations in South Florida, and the rest as they say is Sunny Isles real estate history.
