Mexico: Emerging Giant South of the Border
Direct foreign investment has more than quadrupled. For the last three years, Mexico’s public sector foreign debt has enjoyed the coveted
“investment grade” rating from all the major rating agencies. Trade flows between the United States and Mexico have soared to 267 billion
dollars. With 21.9 million visitors in 2005, the country moves up a notch in World Tourism Organization figures. Current President Vicente
Fox presided over five years of unprecedented macroeconomic stability in Mexico. The country’s finances have never been sounder. GDP in
the first quarter of this year grew nearly 8%, its strongest performance since 1998. The budget is balanced. Inflation, just 3.3% last year,
lower than in the U.S.

Foreign investors now account for 40% of the market capitalization of Mexico. Indeed, confidence in investment-grade Mexico is so sound
